Bionic Woman

Lucy as Becca Sommers

It was such an honor to be part of "Bionic Woman." I fell in love with the script the first time I read it, because it was different from other television shows and the script was just a bit darker than anything I had ever done before. This remake was much different from the original 70s show. One of the biggest differences was my character, Becca, because Jaime didn't have a younger sister in the original series.

My life is so different from Becca’s. She was a teenage girl raised by her older sister, her mom was dead, and she had no father figure. She had moments of rebellion, but underneath it all she was a girl who just wanted to be loved. I think that many teenagers could identify with what she went through in each episode. She could find humor in any situation, and the pilot episode definitely showed that side.

Each episode after that shed more light onto her character. I approached the part by relating to someone or something in my own life. I really focused on the fact that she was being raised by a sister who wasn’t much older. I imagined how I would feel in that situation, and that's how I got through some of the more intense scenes between the sisters.

It was really exciting working with the cast and crew. Michelle Ryan (who played Jaime) was a true pro, but I got to know her silly side as well. Miguel Ferrer (who played Jonas Bledsoe, Jaime's boss) was a very down-to-earth man. Everyone on the show was older and more experienced, so I learned a lot from watching them. Acting in television is hectic because you're always on a time crunch. I learned to stay focused no matter how many things were being thrown at me, and I wasn’t afraid to ask questions.

I hope you guys enjoyed watching the show as much as I enjoyed working on it. Post your comments and questions on my Message Center. I'd love to hear from you.

The Story Behind the Bionic Woman

Lucy played Becca, the troubled younger sister of Jaime Sommers (Michelle Ryan) in this re-imagining of the popular 70s show about a woman given superhuman strength after nearly dying in a car crash.

Becca Sommers was a young, smart, computer whiz who spent her early years traveling with her activist parents. She spent a lot of time alone and quickly learned to take care of herself. Her fascination with computers began when she was four, and by nine years old she was breaking into her school's mainframe computer. Her mother died at about the same time, and Becca began cutting school and discovering the world of underground computer hackers. Becca developed a close relationship with her father until she hacked into the website of a government agency that he was investigating, and he sent her to live with her sister Jaime. She was kept on a short leash, and had a tough time adjusting to her new life.

Becca didn’t know Jaime’s secret, and Jaime tried to protect her from the truth. But Jaime was also struggling with her new life, and her biggest challenge was dealing with the rebellious Becca.

Alienated from her sister and abandoned by her father, Becca was a typical hyper-smart teenager always getting herself into trouble. But underneath, she was a young woman struggling with her identity who yearned to connect with her older sibling. The sisters’ relationship added an emotional impact to the show, and their conflicts explored the complex dynamics of young women living in an imperfect world.
