'Pretty Little Liars' episode 9 sneak peek: 'The Perfect Storm' lets Aria, Noel have a moment

the-perfect-storm-pretty-little-liars.jpg"Pretty Little Liars" only has two episodes left before it goes on its mid-season hiatus. The penultimate episode is "The Perfect Storm," where the classic TV convention of a storm trapping the characters in various situations leads to big drama.

For Aria (Lucy Hale), it means being trapped with her new hottie Noel (Brant Daugherty). So what better way to pass the time than to sing? Hale, a finalist on "American Juniors" in 2003 (she's still in touch with her co-stars), flexes her golden pipes on Eva Cassidy's "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" while Daugherty shows off his guitar skills.

Just as they are about to kiss, who is walking in? Is it Mr. Ezra Fitz (Ian Harding), who has been MIA since Homecoming? We certainly hope so.

Meanwhile, Officer Wilden (Bryce Johnson) is still giving the girls a hard look as he investigates Ali's murder. What is Emily lying about? Is it her date with Maya or something else?

And did you catch the text from "A"? "Hey Em -- you weren't the only one with Great Expectations. Check it out. xoxo -- A." So last week A says something to Spencer about Tom Sawyer and this week it's "Great Expectations." What do you think it means?

"The Perfect Storm" airs Tuesday, Aug. 3 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC Family.

    Celebrity Feature: Lucy Hale

    http://www.whowhatwear.com/website/admin/uploads/7-27-10-1-medium.jpg

For most people, the cornerstones of adolescence—cliques, curfews, and AP classes—are memories best suppressed, or at least not revisited on a daily basis. But for actress Lucy Hale, the hallowed halls of high school are not only unforgettable, they're also responsible for catapulting her into the spotlight. Currently starring in ABC Family's cult-hit TV show Pretty Little Liars, the 21-year-old Tennessee native is turning heads with her role as Aria Montgomery, a high school junior embroiled in a murder-mystery scandal involving the disappearance and death of one of her best friends.

    http://www.whowhatwear.com/website/admin/uploads/7-27-10-2-small.jpg

For those of you who aren't familiar with PLL, which is based on a series of phenomenally popular young adult books, all you really need to know is that it's compulsively addictive and should be immediately added to your TiVo list. The soapy show is positively packed with all the drama we love: haunting secrets, crazy miscommunications, and clique cattiness galore. The result is kind of Gossip Girl (sans New York City) meets I Know What You Did Last Summer, plus a smidge of Heathers for good measure—must-watch stuff, to say the least.

In addition to getting into all kinds of memorable antics as Aria Montgomery—like making out with her hot English teacher, oh yes, it goes there—Hale's character also enjoys the most noteworthy wardrobe on the show. Always flirtatiously quirky and eclectically assembled, Aria's ensembles invariably involve a number of layers, prints, and loads of accessories. The combination adds up to a look that's a little grungy, a little girly, and totally grounded. "Sometimes an outfit can look so wrong," Hale says, acknowledging the how-did-she-put-that-together aspect of her character's style. "But if you look at it more closely, suddenly you realize it's so right."

    http://www.whowhatwear.com/website/admin/uploads/7-27-10-4-medium.jpg

One thing's for sure: Aria's predilection for flat statement boots, edgy jewelry, and above-the-knee socks is decidedly different from what Hale wore during her high school years. "When I was 16, I wasn't a risk taker; I was very basic, just jeans and t-shirts," she says. "I loved fashion, I loved looking at it, and I could admire the people who took those risks, but I could never do it. I'm proud of myself that I'm willing to take the extra step and do something a little different now." Over the years, Hale's style sensibilities have evolved to include lots of accessories (she loves hats, belts, and jewelry) and very specific silhouettes. "I like to look really feminine—I'm all about dresses, heels, hair and makeup—but then again, I'm also obsessed with my Steve Madden motorcycle boots," she says. Hale cheerfully admits that this combination of girly-plus-tough touches (a skull-embellished knuckle duster ring is one of her favorite pieces of jewelry) is a work in progress. "I'm still finding myself and figuring out what my signature style is," she says. "There's nothing I wouldn't try at this point."
    http://www.whowhatwear.com/website/admin/uploads/7-27-10-3-small.jpg

This open-minded attitude was perfect for our photo shoot, which imagines Hale as a mod muse in some of the season's most covetable pieces. Clad in a combination of fall's key trends—faux fur, animal accents, textured legwear—with loads of ladylike vintage finds, these ensembles reference the early '60s in a completely current, thoroughly wearable way. The results are unquestionably chic and, happily, Hale agrees, citing the leopard faux fur Wren Jacket as her top pick ("It's a timeless piece and I just love the cut."). She also called out two other standout items, the Anna Sui for Leg Resource print tights ("so cute and different.") and a vintage rhinestone and pearl belt from The Way We Wore, as her favorite pieces. That's right, dear readers, she's got taste and talent—a formidable combination indeed—just one more reason why we love Lucy!

'Pretty Little Liars' Lucy Hale: 'It's not the end' of Aria and Mr. Fitz

Mr. Fitz (Ian Harding) and Aria have parted ways on "Pretty Little Liars," but Zap2it caught up with "Liars" star Lucy Hale at the KTLA News Morning Show, where she laid the Mr. Fitz fears to rest.

"It's not the end of the Fitz and Montgomery relationship," Hale assures us. "There's a little question about where he's gone, is he gone for good? Because in the books he goes away and when he goes away, he goes away for good ... but it's not the end of it."

It's good to hear that Mr. Fitz will be back because Aria's home life isn't getting an easier.

"[The Montgomery family] is pretty much broken at this point ... Everyone expected my dad to leave, but my mom goes away," Hale says. "I'm trying to spend time with my dad, with my mom and take care of my brother and try to keep a sane head for myself."

But the Tuesday (July 27) episode of "Liars" is not focusing much on Mr. Fitz or the Montgomery family. Instead, Alison's memorial is front and center -- and the introduction of Ali's brother Jason (Parker Bagley).

"It's supposed to be a happy day, remembering our memories and remembering her," says Hale. "But her brother comes and is a completely different person from what we remember him as ... He takes the whole memorial by the reins. There's a lot of great stuff between him and Spencer (Troian Bellisario) that is sort-of a little questionable."

Hale also teases the return of Officer Wilden (Bryce Johnson), who is giving hard looks at the girls, "especially Emily." "He doesn't let us get off very easily. He's back with a force," Hale tells us.

And in response to fan Biankha's question, Hale says her favorite episode is "the Homecoming episode."

"I loved the outfits and I loved the set. We don't always get to come together, the whole cast, because we have our own separate storylines," Hale explains. "In this one, literally probably every character was in that episode so that was really fun for me."

"Pretty Little Liars" airs Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. ET on ABC Family.

YH Goes 1-on-1 with "Pretty Little" Lucy Hale

I had the opportunity to talk to Lucy Hale about her hot show, her TV faves, and her own beauty basics: Here’s how the convo went down!

ME: You have beautiful skin! What's your secret? Any favorite products?

LUCY: Aw, too sweet! I never go to bed with makeup on. I moisturize, use sunscreen, eye cream... you name it. I would recommend for everyone to get a great dermatologist. Mine has made a world of a difference with my skin! I am a huge fan of all of Neutrogena's products. Also, the Clarisonic brush is fantastic.

ME: Congrats on "Pretty Little Liars" being picked up for a 2nd season! Any spoilers you can spill?

LUCY: Thanks so much! You can expect much more scandal, secrets, and of course lies :) Lots of romance as well!

ME: What advice do you have for young hopefuls trying to break into the industry?

LUCY: Make sure you want it for the right reasons and because you love it. Be able to learn from the negative and be okay with rejection. Also, take every opportunity you can get! You never know what small things can lead to.

ME: What is some of the best advice you've ever gotten (career or otherwise)?

LUCY: “Always Stay grateful and remember where you came from.” (my mom); and "Don't smoke." (my grandma)

ME: As a TV star, do you watch a lot of TV? What's your favorite show?

LUCY: I adore TV! Right now I am really into "Glee," "Modern Family," "True Blood"... old reruns of "The Office" and "Friends." I love documentaries as well and anything on Discovery Health Channel.

lucy-hale-pretty-little-lia.jpg"Pretty Little Liars" star Lucy Hale joined Ryan Seacrest on his KIIS morning radio show Tuesday (July 20) and dished all about the last four episodes of the hit ABC Family show. Don't keep reading if you don't want to be spoiled.

After spending a few minutes talking about random things -- pretty girls, "American Juniors" and chimps -- they finally jump into some meatier "Liars" details. Lucy is going to be flexing her golden pipes on "Liars" -- "It's an Eva Cassidy song, I'm singing about my little teacher that I'm in love with," Lucy says.

When Ryan presses to find out who the mysterious "A" is, Lucy says: "I know who 'A' is in the books. Can I say? ... I hope I don't get in trouble ... It's a girl, it's Hanna's best friend. But we're doing it completely different on the show. I don't know who's 'A.'"

Lucy also says that she's not dating anyone. "I'm very single. 21, single ... life's good ... I'm just looking."

Lucy Hale: How to Dress Like a Pretty Little Liar

Lucy Hale: How to Dress Like a Pretty Little Liar

Lucy Hale keeps it cute and sassy as she steps out in Hollywood in a LBD on Sunday night (July 18).

The 21-year-old starlet was just one of the many itching to go and see Inception. We wonder what she thought of it!?

Pretty Little Liars costume designer Mandi Line and Ashley Benson caught up with AOL’s Stylelist for some tips on how you can dress just like the girls on the hit ABC Family show.

Ashley shared of Mandi’s approach to fashion, “Mandi is so great with creating outfits. She buys a lot of basic pieces and then adds fabric or lace to tops, adds studs to jeans, and she makes a lot of jewelry as well. It’s all so cheap and unique, and you’ll be the only person wearing it. It’s nice to buy less expensive clothes and make them dope by adding a few things that reflect your personal style.”

'Pretty Little Liars' Sara Shepard on her cameo, Lucy Hale is 'the perfect Aria'

lucy-hale-sara-shepard.jpg"Pretty Little Liars" author Sara Shepard is set to make a cameo on the show in the upcoming episode "The Homecoming Hangover" -- watch a sneak peek clip her.

ABC Family told Zap2it several weeks ago about the cameo, teasing that she would have an unfriendly encounter with one of the girls. We now know that girl is Lucy Hale's Aria, so Lucy and Sara gave an interview to ABC Family about the upcoming episode.

"It was a lot of fun. I am not an actress," Sara laughs.

"She needed no help! No lie!" Lucy responds. "We were all just like, 'She knows what she's doing.'"

In talking about the casting of the show, Sara says to Lucy, "You're the perfect Aria. From the books, I am actually most like Aria. At least in high school. I was just over high school and I was kind of artsy."

When asked if any of the major events of the books are from her real life, Sara laughs -- no, she didn't have a relationship with her teacher, no, she didn't steal a car. But -- "I did steal socks, but I got caught ... don't shoplift anyone, don't do it! You're just gonna get caught," reveals Sara.

And finally, watch the clip of the interview below for a little tease about Sara's possible return to the show and who A might be...

Sara Shepard's cameo episode of "Pretty Little Liars" airs Tuesday, July 20 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC Family.

Is a Modern Family-Pretty Little Liars Crossover Seriously in the Works?!

Lucy Hale, Pretty Little Liars, Eric Stonestreet, Modern Family ABC Family/Adam Rose; ABC/Danny Feld

Spoiler Alert! We're about to reveal the biggest secret of the summer. Wait, not just of the summer—the biggest secret of the year! Ready? Sure you can handle the monumental dose of scoopage we're about to dish out?!

Here goes: Modern Family's fabulous Fizbo the Clown is actually...

...the infamous A from Pretty Little Liars?!

OK, we're just spitballing here, but truth be told we're pretty much obsessed with the Eric Stonestreet (Cameron) and Lucy Hale (Aria) Twitter lovefest that's been going down before our very eyes, and we just can't contain it any longer!

So here's how this whole scenario started (for those of you who haven't been following this adorable tweet sesh over the past week or so):

After last week's ep of Pretty Little Liars, Eric took to the Twitterverse to profess his love of the ABC Family hit. "I don't care what anybody thinks," the Modern Family fave wrote. "I'm addicted to Pretty Little Liars."

And much to the surprise of everyone, sweet little Lucy caught wind of his obsession and thus began the makings of a beautiful relationship.

Said Lucy: "Ahhh phenomenal! Literally obsessed with your character on Modern Family..." And if you're still thinking we're totally off by outing Eric as A, think again. These two are plotting the crossover of a century!

Eric: Oh just shut up and tell me who -A is!
Lucy: "Ok fine. I will. let me play your cousin that comes into town and we got ourself a deal!
E: Fine! I will have the contract drawn up immediately. now, in the mean time, give me ONE juicy tease.
    L: Ok the secret is....you are A.
    E: Crap! Always thought I had a cruel & sinister side. This confirms it! I'm sorry for what I'm doing to u & the gals.-E I mean -A :(.

And then it happened. Lucy and Eric ran into each other over the holiday weekend—how's that for meant to be?!

"Oh. Look who I ran into and met today!" she tweeted excitedly, picture included. "We talked about how we loved each others shows haha."

And we love this whole idea of a Modern Family-Pretty Little Liars crossover event. Are you guys on board, too?!

Obviously, the admiration between Lucy and Eric is ongoing, so be sure to follow both the stars for the latest scoop on the casting we are dying to see materialize.

    Lucy Hale: Reality Bites

    Lucy Hale: Reality Bites

Lucy Hale shares an intense stare with Ian Harding as he performs a reading on stage in this new still from Pretty Little Liars.

In next week’s episode “Reality Bites Me,” Trying to ignore “A” backfired for the girls and now they must pay the penalty. Whether it is a family in crisis, parental praise for an undeserved honor looming over their head or wearing totally unfashionable scrubs while working off a debt – the girls must deal with it all. And on top of that “A”’s lipstick message is still haunting them.

The girls must also deal with typical teenage drama – the boy kind – when a new boy arrives and pushes the status quo, a secret love is tested, a new romance blooms and an old romance is floating in the grey area.

“Reality Bites Me” premieres NEXT Tuesday, July 6 @ 8PM ET/PT on ABC Family.

ABC's 'Pretty Little Liars', starring Lucy Hale and Shay Mitchell, becoming hit show of summer

ABC Family's 'Pretty Little Liars' stars Troian Bellisario as Spencer Hastings, Shay Mitchell as Emily Fields, Ashley Benson as Hanna Marin and Lucy Hale as Aria Montgomery

ABC Family's 'Pretty Little Liars' stars Troian Bellisario as Spencer Hastings, Shay Mitchell as Emily Fields, Ashley Benson as Hanna Marin and Lucy Hale as Aria Montgomery

ABC Family's "Pretty Little Liars" is the first breakout hit of the summer.

After just three episodes, the network this week ordered 12 more episodes of the show, which is based on a series of young-adult novels of the same name, bumping the first-season total up to 22 hours.

"We knew that the books had a built audience and that that audience would love the show, but after the premiere, suddenly there we were, right at the top of the Google hot list, trending on Twitter ... people just can't get enough of it," ABC Family president Paul Lee told the News. "And we love the show just as much. ... Hopefully, it will last many years to come."

"Pretty Little Liars" focuses on four estranged friends who reunite a year after one of their group, Alison, goes missing. They soon discover they've all been receiving mysterious messages from "A," threatening to expose their darkest secrets.

"Our viewers love the mystery of it. They love the idea of all these hidden secrets and edge-of-your-seat moments," says Lee. "They can relate to the relationships between the characters - a group of girls who are played by such great actresses."

"That's another thing," added Lee. "Casting has been critical to the show's success."

The series stars Lucy Hale, Shay Mitchell, Troian Bellisario and Ashley Benson.

"Pretty Little Liars" airs Tuesdays at 8.

"I really like this show. It reminds me of the golden days of the WB," says pop culture expert Robert Thompson of Syracuse University, who added that the series was actually once pitched for the now-extinct network. "It's a beautiful little show. It looks good, the theme song is cool, there are all of these really pretty people dressed in fabulous-looking clothes. It has a real 'Desperate Housewives' feel to it."

The "Pretty Little Liars" premiere pulled in 2.5 million viewers and, more importantly, did well in the coveted 18-49 demographic. It has continued to grow steadily.

Thompson says the network's extensive promotion campaign for the series, as well as the show's provocative title, were both effective in perking up viewer interest and getting eyeballs on the premiere.

"But that'll only get people into the tent," he says. "All the promoting in the world wouldn't get an audience to stick around if they don't like the show. But obviously, they do."

ABC Family has also had a lot of success launching series in the summer, with "Make It or Break It" last year and "The Secret Life of an American Teenager" in July 2008.

"ABC Family had a pretty difficult time early on trying to find themselves a niche," says Brad Adgate, senior vice president of Research Horizon Media. "It seems like they've settled in on this target audience, and young viewers now know what to expect when they tune in."

'Pretty Little Liars': ABC Family orders 12 extra episodes

can-you-hear-me-now-pretty-little-liars.jpgWoohoo! Ahem. We're just a little bit excited that ABC Family has picked up 12 more episode of our favorite summer show, "Pretty Little Liars," which means we'll be getting a full 22-episode season.

Not that it's a surprise. According to Kate Jeurgens, the EVP of Original Programming, "'Pretty Little Liars' is a breakout hit for the network. It's a perfect fit with the network's strong slate of original scripted dramas." The show launched ABC Family's highest-ever series debut in key demographics.

With nine "Pretty Little Liars" books worth of material to work from, we're sure that producers will have no trouble working out storylines for the back twelve episodes. We're already dying to see what happens with Aria (Lucy Hale) and Professor McHottie (Ian Harding).

See the previews of Episode 4 below!

"Can You Hear Me Now" airs Tuesday, June 29 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC Family.

'Pretty Little' Lucy Hale Teases Huge 'Twists and Turns'

If Alison DiLaurentis is truly and sincerely dead on ‘Pretty Little Liars‘ (Tuesdays at 8/c), who is taunting gal pals Aria, Spencer, Hanna and Emily “from the great beyond?” Is blind Jenna about to offer some illuminating insight? Lucy Hale, one of the stars of ABC Family’s freshman hit, shared a peek at how the field of suspects is about to be added to… and then narrowed down.

    lucy-hale-pretty-little-liars.jpg

Congratulations on ‘Pretty Little Liars’ debuting so strongly.
Oh, thank you so much! We are all very, very happy about it.

Is this the kind of show you would watch if you weren’t on it?
Totally. It’s right up my alley, so it’s exciting to be a part of something I would be a fan of.

The end of last week’s episode wanted us to believe that Jenna (played by Tammin Sursok) is the one posing as “A” – but that’s got to be a big red herring.

I wish I could say. But yeah, there are a lot of twists and turns ahead. Throughout the show, you’re going to think you know who’s behind it all, and then things will change…. Jenna’s a huge part of the storyline, so you’ll see more of her as she causes even more drama, reveals secrets….

Whatever the case, I have to imagine there is more than one person pulling the strings here.
A few new characters will be introduced who are a bit suspicious, and [by Episode 8] there are three or four who could be behind it all.

Will we get flashbacks to the night Alison went missing?
We haven’t done many actual flashbacks of the actual night, but we show before she disappeared, revealing how our friendship used to be.

The actress playing Alison (Sasha Pieterse) reminds me of a very young Denise Richards.
She kinda does! I hadn’t thought of that, but now I see the resemblance. She is so young compared to all of us – she’s 14 and we’re all in like our 20s!

What sort of obstacles will Aria and her teacher-boyfriend Fitz (Ian Harding) face, outside of judgmental little texts from “A”?
She’s just trying to get a handle on this whole secret relationship she has with him. She’s trying to decide if it’s the right thing to do, since it could get him into a lot of trouble. And while she’s dealing with all that, meanwhile at home her dad cheated on her mom, so I try to take care of my mom while she figures all of this news out…. Aria has a lot on her shoulders.

    To Kill A Mocking Girl

Will we meet the young woman Aria’s father had the affair with?
Yes, very soon [and played by 'One Tree Hill's Amanda Schull]. That’s in the next episode!

Without naming names, have you ever crushed hard on a teacher?
Never. I always had like really old teachers. [Laughs] There’s been no one even remotely close to what [Fitz] is!

Do you ever look around at Holly Marie Combs (’Charmed’), Chad Lowe (’Life Goes On’), Laura Leighton (’Melrose Place’) and Nia Peeples (’Fame’) and think, “I can’t believe this show is about us“?
I know, we’ve got these actors who have been doing this longer than I and the other girls have, and that’s really awesome. They add something different and bring in viewers who grew up with the shows they did.

Are you still real-life roommates with Ashley Newbrough, your “twin sister” from ‘Privileged’?
She’s still a dear, dear friend of mine, but I actually just moved into my own place.

And what about JoAnna Garcia? She and I traded a flurry of emails when she got engaged [to New York Yankee Nick Swisher]. Can you help me crash that wedding?
Absolutely! Lets do it. I actually saw her the other day and she has this huge rock on her hand. I mean, the ring is just stunning. She’s the sweetest thing in the world, so I’m glad she found someone. I can’t wait to go to the wedding.

I told Jo that she has my blessing – if only because he is, after all, a Yankee.
[Laughs] Exactly. He’s the real deal!

    Lucy Hale: Style Questionnaire

Want to know more about Lucy Hale's style preferences? We got all details right here!

How would you describe your personal style?
I’d say my style is pretty laid back for the most part. I LOVE fashion and really enjoy getting ideas from different types styles. During the week, I am all about comfort, while still having fun with accessories and great shoes. I do love getting dressed up for the weekends and special events though. It is always nice to get all dolled up for a night out. Also, I have a bit of a shoe obsession...

Who is your all-time favorite designer and why?

To be completely honest, I don’t own much from high fashion designers – although I do admire their work. Most of my clothes come from a variety of different stores and a variety of different prices. I love a good bargain.

Alice & Olivia have the cutest dresses that I really love. Marc Jacobs is quirky and fun to wear. Dior is just stunning and timeless.

Do you tend to follow trends or do you stick to certain style no matter what is popular at the moment?

A little of both. One of my favorite things is to look through magazines and find the latest “IT” thing to wear. I don’t necessarily always wear those trends, but it definitely interests me. Investing in good pieces that will never go out of style is something I really believe in (great jeans, nice handbag, basic pumps, black blazer...).

Lucy Hale: Even I don't know how it's going to end!

Considering all the fornication that goes down on "Desperate Housewives" and "Gossip Girl" it was only a matter of time before those two shows produced an heir. "Pretty Little Liars" is that delicious, clever and sexy bundle of joy.

Cherry picking the best from both shows, the ABC Family drama centers around four friends who are stalked by an unseen adversary that threatens to expose all their dirty secrets. Oh, and judging from the pilot episode, these girls couldn't contain all their skeletons in Carrie Bradshaw's Park Avenue closet.

Leading the charge is the delightful pocket full of sunshine Lucy Hale, whose character Aria quickly established herself as a confident lady with a habit of getting in over her head. With tonight's all new episode putting one the most curious aspects of the show under a microscope -- an is she or isn't she blind classmate -- we caught up with Lucy to find out what's in store for fans next week, next month and throughout the remainder of season one.

PopWrap: What kind of reactions did you get to the pilot episode?
Lucy Hale: Really awesome. I think even the book readers are excited because we throw some curve balls out there. And we will keep doing that while sticking close to the characters. The events are just a little different.

PW: Right, Holly Marie Combs told me that everything is sped up on the show.
Lucy: Yes, we’re definitely moving very fast through the books. The pilot was the whole first book.

PW: Wow, really? Those books really dragged that out!
Lucy: Yea, they milked it. Definitely. We’re doing 10 episodes and we’ll get through about four the eight books in that time.

PW: Were you familiar with the franchise before signing on?
Lucy: I had heard of them, I hadn’t read them, but I loved the title. It’s a great name and I love the concept. It was also really interesting that ABC Family was ready to make an edgy show like this. They’re really pushing the envelope. It’s not "Boy Meets World," that’s for sure!

PW: Yea, the first episode had potential lesbianism and drug use. Were you attracted to the idea that "PLL" doesn't treat its audience like children?
Lucy: Oh, absolutely. I think that’s so important. Especially now, there’s all these issues that girls and guys go through we don’t talk about. Kids struggle with sexuality – and while I’m by no means saying every girl has a relationship with her English teacher, stuff like that happens. But for some reason TV shies away from it because they don’t think teens can handle it. But teens can handle more than you might expect and it’s awesome ABC Family is willing to give them this show.

PW: Let's talk about that student/teacher relationship. You and Ian Harding, who plays Ezra Fitz, have great chemistry.
Lucy: He is precious. It was awesome because I got to be a part of the casting process and read with about 15 guys. Ian came in at the beginning and when he left, I said, "that’s the guy." He just has something about him – he’s really relatable. And the storyline could go very creepy in the hands of the wrong actor. He makes the love story seem very sweet.

PW: There was a moment at the end of the pilot that hinted their affair may not be over, true?
Lucy: Oh no, it’s just the beginning. [laughs]

PW: And then there was that great moment at the end where we learned that Jenna was a blind girl. Tonight's episode is called "The Jenna Thing," what do we learn about her?
Lucy: Basically, tonight you find out why Jenna is the way she is. Why she’s blind and what the four girls had to do with it. As far as Aria, she’s dealing with Ezra but the episode fully tells you about Jenna, what she has to do with Allison and why she is the way she is.

PW: Will every episode be about one of the girls more than the others?
Lucy: Each episode focuses on one girl and the issues they’re going through. You really get to know each character more in depth. They won't all be as suspense driven. Some of the shows are more real about what’s going on at school. I feel like it’s a relatable show ... aside from the disappearance of our friend and the fact we’re getting stalked.

PW: In addition to A's disappearance, Aria's also dealing with the secret her father's cheating. How soon does that come into play?
Lucy: My mom finds out pretty soon – it breaks apart our family so on top of everything else I’m dealing with I now have to protect my brother, my mom and it becomes a huge part of my storyline. It’s so interesting that my dad had an affair with one of his students and I’m having one with my English teacher.

PW: It's like the apple in reverse doesn’t fall far from the tree, or something.
Lucy: Exactly [laughs]. I love that while Ezra goes away in the books, I don't think we're going to do that in the show. We have great chemistry, so I’m interested to see where that goes. And how everything with Aria’s parents unfolds.

PW: What can you tell us moving forward?
Lucy: Well, we just started work on the eighth episode and in the books you keep thinking you find out who killed her and get closure. But there’s always a twist. So I don’t know how they’re going to do it in the show. I feel like they would want to do it a little different, so we can get closure and move on. I mean, still have A but not necessarily searching for the killer.

PW: Right, like on "Desperate Housewives" -- Mary Alice's murder kick started the show, but then learning more about the character's took center stage.
Lucy: Exactly. And I think the writer’s know that. They don’t really tell the cast anything, but I think that’s the plan. It’ll be interesting. We’re about to start the eighth episode and I don’t know how we’re gunna wrap it all up in ten episodes. I don’t know how it’s going to end, it’s exciting!

'Pretty Little Liars' Lucy Hale's 21st birthday cupcakes!

lucy-hale-birthday.jpgLucy Hale celebrated her 21st birthday Monday (June 14) afternoon on the set of her ABC Family hit "Pretty Little Liars."

The brunette -- who plays Aria Montgomery on the new show that reminds The Dish Rag of "Gossip Girls" only with more mystery --  blew out the candles on her delish Chocolate Peanut Butter Cold Stone Creamery ice cream cupcakes.

Smart way to indulge and still count those calories, girls.

Lucy was surrounded by her costars Ashley Benson (who posted the candle blowing pic on her Twitter), Shay Mitchell, Troian Bellasario and about 160 crew members, who all serenaded the birthday girl.

    Happy B-Day, Lucy!

Happy 21st Birthday To 'Pretty Little Liars' Star Lucy Hale!

    Lucy Hale Pretty Little Liars

What better birthday present for an up-and-coming actress than a brand new hit show?! Well 2.5 million viewers made Lucy Hale’s wish come true when this birthday girl’s series debut of “Pretty Little Liars” premiered as the highest rated show in ABC family history last week.

Perhaps a frozen margarita or Carrie Bradshaw-like cosmo is all she needs to complete what must be the beginning of a fabulous 21st birthday!

Yet, while the newly legal starlet steps into the realm of adulthood, her pretty little counterpart is only a mere 16-years-old, making for some very juicy and jailbait prone plot lines that keep audiences wanting more.

But if you weren’t one of the millions to tune in last week, we’ll share with you all about the hot affair Lucy's character, Aria, must keep a dirty little secret. (By the way, that affair was so hot, that after only one episode, we named her man, Ian Harding, as our Hump Day Hottie last week!)

“I meet this great guy in a restaurant, and think I've met a wonderful person who I connect with really well,” she explained in and interview with TV Guide. “Then go to school the next day and, bam, he's my English teacher. We try to stop it. We know it's wrong and we know it can get him in trouble, but we have this undeniable connection and chemistry and can't stay away from each other.”

This isn’t the first time Lucy takes on the role of causing a stir amongst one of her teachers. The doe-eyed brunette played a rebellious teen torturing the likes of her “Privileged” tutor, not soon after making an appearance in the 2008 chick flick, "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2."

However Lucy says she wasn’t too surprised by the instant popularity of her new project, due to the buzz created by the books the series is adapted from.

“I kind of expected it because it was a successful book series,” she said. “I just hope everyone is as excited after it airs.”

Well, if “Twilight” is any indication of how a good read can launch off the careers of young actors into the world of superstardom, then there is no secret that Lucy Hale has a lot to celebrate at her big 21st birthday bash!

Lucy Hale on Pretty Little Liars: Cute Boys, Love Stories and Cool Fashion!

Lucy Hale on Pretty Little Liars: Cute Boys, Love Stories and Cool Fashion!

Why should you tune in for Pretty Little Liars, which debuts on ABC Family tonight?

Star Lucy Hale makes it clear in a new interview with TV Guide: the series has "really cute boys, great love stories and you get to see some cool fashion."

What else do you need to know about the drama?!? Hale reveals more in the following excerpts:

What is her character, Aria, like? In the pilot, she's coming home from Iceland, where she found herself and became comfortable with who she was. She's very mature for her age and comfortable in her own skin, which I think is good for girls to see because it's kind of rare. She's different; she's quirky. She sort of does her own thing, and she's fine with it.

Is there pressure to live up to the books on which the show is based? Some people are upset because we don't look like the models on the covers. I think everyone's doing a great job because the characteristics are all the same - the trials they go through, the secrets that they keep.

On Aria's love interest, Mr. Fitz (Ian Harding): I meet this great guy in a restaurant, and think I've met a wonderful person who I connect with really well. Then go to school the next day and, bam, he's my English teacher. We try to stop it. We know it's wrong and we know it can get him in trouble, but we have this undeniable connection and chemistry and can't stay away from each other.

Pretty Little Liars Debuts to Huge Ratings

Following this week's pilot episode of Pretty Little Liars, we have one thing to say to The CW executive that passed on this show: Sucks to be you!

The drama premiered to 2.5 million viewers, making it the most-watched debut in ABC Family history, and earning a higher rating that average episodes of 90210 and Gossip Girl.

The series will move forward with an episode on June 15 titled "The Jenna Thing" (watch a preview for it NOW), along with a special guest-starring appearance.

    Important Discussion

Sara Shepard, the author who penned the books on which Pretty Little Liars is based, will make a cameo later this summer as substitute teacher at Rosewood High School. She'll appear in episode seven.

Says star Lucy Hale of Shepard and her novels: "When I got involved in the show, I went and bought all of [the books]. I'm now on the seventh one... I can't stop reading them. They're addictive."

Pretty Little Liars' Lucy Hale: Dark Secrets Can Ruin Lives

Playing a character with a built-in fan base can be daunting, but Lucy Hale is up for the challenge in ABC Family's new drama Pretty Little Liars (premiering Tuesday at 8/7c), The show, adapted from a successful book series, focuses on a group of friends whose Queen B Alison (Sasha Pieterse) goes missing. The clique, which split after Alison disappeared, reunites a year later when the girls mysteriously begin receiving messages from someone who seems to know all their secrets. Hale, who plays 16-year-old Aria, tells TVGuide.com why she relates to her character, what it's like playing the daughter of Charmed's Holly Marie Combs, and why Aria and her English teacher have a dangerous yet undeniable connection.

TVGuide.com: Tell us about Pretty Little Liars.
Lucy Hale: In the first episode, you're introduced to these characters who have dark secrets that can basically ruin their lives. The series is figuring out what happened to Alison and who is threatening us, but also we have our everyday issues. I think that's what's going to hook people. It's got really cute boys, great love stories and you get to see some cool fashion as well.

    TVGuide.com: What's Aria like?
Hale: In the pilot, she's coming home from Iceland, where she found herself and became comfortable with who she was. She's very mature for her age and comfortable in her own skin, which I think is good for girls to see because it's kind of rare. She's different; she's quirky. She sort of does her own thing, and she's fine with it.

TVGuide.com: How do you relate to Aria?
Hale: Growing up I always felt like I was different from the girls my age because I had different interests and was thinking about different things. Aria's like that too. I came from Privileged, where I played a character much different from Aria. She was bubbly and all over the place, so it's cool to get to do something a little bit more subdued and real. This is my favorite style of acting because although everything is heightened and the storylines are out there, the characters are very real.

TVGuide.com: Had you read the books before?
Hale: When I got involved with [the show] I went and bought them all. I just didn't realize how [popular] they were — they have a huge following. I'm on the seventh book now. They're pretty addictive — I can't put them down. It is kind of scary because the fans are so in love with the characters in the book.

See photos from Pretty Little Liars

TVGuide.com: Do you feel pressure because of the success of the books?
Hale: I feel like a lot of people don't think we can live up to what these book characters are. Some people are upset because we don't look like the models on the covers. I think everyone's doing a great job because the characteristics are all the same — the trials they go through, the secrets that they keep.

TVGuide.com: Tell me about your love interest, Mr. Fitz, played by Ian Harding.
Hale: I meet this great guy in a restaurant, and think I've met a wonderful person who I connect with really well. Then go to school the next day and, bam, he's my English teacher. We try to stop it. We know it's wrong and we know it can get him in trouble, but we have this undeniable connection and chemistry and can't stay away from each other. It's exciting for Aria, and she has to keep it from everyone. But at the same time she knows how dangerous it is playing with fire.

TVGuide.com: What's it like working with Holly Marie Combs?
Hale: I was super excited to have her on board because she's been around for a really long time and did Charmed for eight years. She knows how to deal with certain situations, she gives me advice, and she's just really fun.

TVGuide.com: Did you expect all the buzz surrounding the show?
Hale: I kind of expected it because it was a successful book series. I just hope everyone is as excited after it airs.

'Pretty Little Liars': On set with Laura Leighton, Lucy Hale and company

What we're predicting to be TV's guiltiest pleasure of the summer -- ABC Family's "Pretty Little Liars" -- hits the small screen Tuesday (June 8) and Korbi TV stormed the set, so we could get to know said liars and some of the so-called "adults" in their life.

So who is this mature, young woman who's getting it on with the old guy? Lucy Hale explains: "[Aria]'s very put together... she's got a good head on her shoulders and, you know, [she's] a little different, a little quirky."

But is she a liar? Oh yeah. Hale didn't hesitate to tell me that, though her character may be a good person, she's got secrets. "It's fun to get to play somewhat of a bad girl."

'Pretty Little Liars' Lucy Hale on hair color controversy!

If you're a "Gossip Girl" fan and aren't familiar with the eight book series, "Pretty Little Liars," you're in for a TV treat Tuesday (June 7) when ABC Family's hot new summer show premieres.

The Dish Rag caught up with Lucy Hale, who plays Aria Montgomery, at a "Pretty Little Liars" event at Barnes and Noble in Los Angeles on Saturday (June 5). We chatted about the series, the girls' secrets and the controversy over the cast's hair color which is different from the way the girls are described in Sara Shephard's novels.

About the initial fan reaction (and online petition) to the girls casting, Lucy explains that while they may not look like the way the book's characters were described (Hanna was a brunette, Spencer's hair was dark blond, Emily had red hair and Aria was a brunette) or were shown on the covers, "We have kept the same characteristics, we go through the same things, we just don't look exactly like the girls."

She hopes the fans will change their minds and compares the initial fan reaction to PLL casting to that of "Twilight."

"When "Twilight" started, everyone was saying, Kristen Stewart isn't right for role," Lucy explains. "But now, no one imagine anyone different."

She's right about that. If memory serves, there was even some initial dismay over the casting of Robert Pattinson! Can you imagine?

To prepare for the show, Think GG and all the accompanying intriguing text messages, but with four high school girls in a privileged community, a murder, a mysterious disappearance, a lesbian character (maybe), sex with a teacher, and something terrible about Jenna.

It makes Serena van der Woodsen's dark past look like a comedy and Blair Waldorf's scheming appear positively angelic.

'Pretty Little Liars': Lucy Hale on funeral scene and a sneak peek!

lucy-hale-pretty-little-liars.jpg"Pretty Little Liars" is one of the hottest new shows coming your way this summer. It tells the tale of four high school girls in the smalltown of Rosewood that may seem picturesque -- but is actually hiding something much darker.

The girls start to get mysterious messages signed "A," causing them to wonder if it has anything to do with their missing friend Allison. In the pilot, there is a funeral scene -- but who is it for? You'll have to tune in to find out.

"Liars" star Lucy Hale (Aria Montgomery on the show) tells Zap2it that the funeral scene was her favorite part of filming so far. "Since we all have our separate storylines, we don't always get to work together, but I just love when all of us get together and do a huge scene. In the pilot, there's a huge funeral scene and probably every single cast member is there, so that's always fun," says Lucy.

Check out this sneak peek clip and don't forget to tune in to the premiere Tuesday, June 8 on ABC Family at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

“Our sets are green,” says "Pretty Little Liars" star Lucy Hale, noting use of sustainable materials like bamboo and a ban on plastic water bottles. Prius-driving Hale plays one of four friends hiding big secrets in the ABC Family series, a sort of "Gossip Girl" meets "I Know What You Did Last Summer" mystery based on a popular book series in which a mean girl type (Sasha Pieterse) who’d disappeared a year before turns up dead — but the four continue to receive threatening messages from her.

    Pretty Little Liars: PhotoBooth Fun!

    Pretty Little Liars: PhotoBooth Fun!

Lucy Hale, Ashley Benson, Shay Mitchell and Troian Bellisario get silly inside the photo booth during Disney and ABC Television Group’s Summer press junket in Burbank, Calif., last weekend.

The foursome, joined by Holly Marie Combs and Chad Lowe, are anxious to premiere their new summer series on ABC Family. There’s less than a month!!!

Author Sara Shepard recently told JJJ that of what she’s seen of the series, it’s stayed pretty true to the books. She shared, “I did get to read the screenplay pretty early on and I was pretty happy with it. I think it had been through a lot of revisions by then but it was pretty true to the pilot so for me it was like, well, this is just like the book, so of course I’m happy with it. I am not a screenwriter so I did not have a part in that but I think Marlene King, who is the main screenwriter, I think she’s done a great job.”

Pretty Little Liar's Lucy Hale talks skin and hair products, singing and her character Aria

    Lucy Hale
    Lucy Hale

At 20 years old, Lucy Hale has already found success from her previous television series, Privileged, her role in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, and is now a lead on ABC Family's highly anticipated show Pretty Little Liars, from the producers of Gossip Girl and The Vampire Diaries. In this interview, Lucy talks to me about beauty, fitness, and of course, Pretty Little Liars!

What beauty products do you use on a daily basis?

Lucy: I use Frederic Fakkai shampoo, I just like the way it smell and the way it makes my hair look. If I’m not working, I usually just let it air dry. I don’t really use a lot of hair products. If I do, I use John Frieda Curl Enhancing Spray. Face wise, I have super sensitive skin, so I’ve tried like everything, and a lot of stuff just makes my skin breakout. But I’ve found that Neutrogena works great with my skin. I use their face wash and lotion. Makeup wise, I’m all over the place. I like everything. I’m a sucker for buying everything just because it has a pretty package. (laughs) I really like Dior eyeshadows, Mac, Hard Candy, Stila, everything.

Being on TV, you work with a lot of makeup artists. Have you picked up anything from them that you use?

Lucy: Yeah. I definitely look at what they’re doing. One thing I’ve definitely learned is how to apply concealer the right way and make it look natural. Also, I learned how to put on fake individual eyelashes. I couldn’t do it before the makeup artists on Pretty Little Liars taught me. There’s a trick to doing it, in order to get them aligned right without poking your eye out. (laughs)

    What is your fitness regimen?

Lucy: When you’re filming it’s kind of crazy since you don’t know the hours, but I’ve recently started working with a trainer that I really love. I work with her a few times a week. I also love Pilates and running. I try to work out as often as I can, depending on my schedule. I got a maltipoo dog for Christmas, so I’m always at the Canyon’s hiking.

Who is your personal beauty icon?

Lucy: I love Kate Winslet. I think she’s just so classy. I feel like she’s gotten more and more beautiful as she’s gotten older, which hopefully that will happen for me. (laughs) I just think she always looks so put together and natural.

What drew you to your character on Pretty Little Liars?

Lucy: When I got involved with the show, I wasn’t sure which character I was going to play yet because I went out for Aria and Hanna. I ended up being more drawn to Aria because she’s sort of the different one of the group. She’s just does her own thing and has different interests. She’s an old soul, and knows what she wants. She’s very mature for her age, and I like to say that she makes good decisions aside from some of the stuff that happens in the pilot and in the show. She just seems put together and she’s very fun play.

Do you have similarities with Aria, that make it easier to connect with her as a character?

Lucy: A lot of stuff in the show, I can’t draw from anything in my personal life because It deals with some pretty heavy stuff. Just growing up and even now, I feel like I have different interests than a lot of people. I like to think that I do my own thing and make good decisions. I’ve been told since I can remember that I’m mature for my age, so I guess that’s how I relate.

On another note, you’re into singing as well, right?

    Lucy: Mhm.

Can we look forward to anything with that? Are you going to dive deeper?

Lucy: Yeah. Singings just always sort of been on the back burning since my acting started picking up, but I definitely love music and I would love to explore that and maybe make an album one day. Definitely would love to do a musical where I could do acting and singing. Maybe in the future there will be some singing involved with the show, I’m not sure right now, but hopefully.

Do you have any other projects in the works?

Lucy: Right now it’s pretty much Pretty Little Liars 24/7. (laughs) Maybe when we have a break, I’d love to do films.

    Any dream roles?

Lucy: I wanna do everything. An example of a career that I really, really love is Reese Witherspoon. I feel like she has done it all. She started out really young and she does romantic comedies, and then she can do dramas. I’d like to do a little bit of everything.

Would you like to send a personal message to your fans and fans anticipating the shows premiere?

Lucy: I just want to say thank you to everyone who has followed me from a couple years back and being so supportive. I really hope the fans of the books really enjoy the show because we’re working very hard and we’re sticking close to what made the books popular. It’s a really fun show, and it premieres June 8th at 8 on ABC Family!

You can get in touch with Lucy on her personal twitter, and don't forget to tune in for the premiere of Pretty Little Liars on ABC Family June 8th at 8PM! Trailer is below!

Pretty Little Liars: Dinner With the Stars!

Hey guys! So I've heard a lot of you are excited for the TV show...AND YOU SHOULD BE! I've seen the pilot and it's awesome-- it sticks to the plot of the book and stays very true to the characters. And better yet, look who I got to meet in New York last week?

These pretty ladies are our new Pretty Little Liars! Clockwise from left: Shay Mitchell, who plays Emily. Troian Bellisario, who plays Spencer. Ashley Benson, who plays Hanna. And Lucy Hale, who plays Aria. And oh yeah, there I am in the middle! Look how fancy we all are!

The girls were so awesome. We had a great dinner together talking about the books, what it was like being cast for the show, how they get along with their co-stars (all the guys are SO CUTE!) and other fun things about our lives! (We all passed around pictures of our dogs!) Don't be discouraged that the stars don't quite look like the characters on the covers of the books. They embody the characters completely, and I couldn't be happier with the cast. Let's hope I get to spend some time in LA on the set soon! (I heard it's on a Warner Brothers set. Apparently Hollywood tours go past it all the time!)

The TV show debuts on June 8. That's also when WANTED, the conclusion to the PLL series, comes out! You guys ready? I'm pretty sure WANTED is the craziest, scariest PLL yet!

Your First Look at ABC Family's Pretty Little Liars

If Desperate Housewives, '90s slasher flick I Know What You Did Last Summer and just a splash of Mean Girls had a love child, Pretty Little Liars would have to be it.

With its undeniably gorgeous cast and thriller-esque vibe, there's no denying ABC Family's highly anticipated new series, starring the always adorable Lucy Hale (RIP Privileged), could be the next big thing—and we've got your exclusive first look right here! Interested? Good, because there's more...

Click here to check out the photos from PLL!

    Pretty Little Liars
comes from those Alloy Entertainment masterminds (think Gossip Girl and The Vampire Diaries) and focuses on the coming together of four former besties who fell out of touch after their queen bee went missing. Life seems perfect from the outside looking in, but all is not what it seems once we get a closer look into the lives of these suburban princesses.

Things really turn, well, ugly when secrets from the past start seeping out, courtesy of an anonymous messenger who goes by the name "A." And the fabulous tagline to top it all off? "Never trust a pretty girl with an ugly secret." Creep-ay!

In addition to Lucy, PLL stars Troian Bellisario (left), Ashley Benson (blonde on top), Shay Mitchell (right) and Laura Leighton, Chad Lowe, Holly Marie Combs and Nia Peeples.

Fun fact: The folks over at Warner Bros. have transformed what was once Luke's Diner on Gilmore Girls into PLL's Rosewood Cafe. A little sad though. We thought that WB landmark would be immortalized.

Are you onboard for some of this bad girl goodness? Give us your thoughts on the gorgeous shot above, then tune in for the Pretty Little Liars premiere Tuesday, June 8 at 8 p.m. on ABC Family.

Actress, singer, pretty little liar … these are just some of the reasons we love Lucy.

Lucy Hale stars as Aria in the new ABC Family Original Series "Pretty Little Liars."

"Pretty Little Liars" premieres on Tuesday, June 8 at 8/7c, only on ABC Family.

You probably remember Lucy best as Rose on "Privileged," and Becca on "Bionic Woman." (She rocked both roles, BTW.)

She's also guest-starred on "Wizards of Waverly Place." (Where she worked with David Henrie, and that's all we're going to say about THAT.) And she's been on "How I Met Your Mother," "CSI: Miami," "Private Practice," "Drake & Josh," and "Ruby and the Rockits."

But did you know that Lucy's a singer?

She was on the reality show "American Juniors," and her amazing singing voice earned her a spot as a finalist.

There are so many reasons to love Lucy. And now that she's on "Pretty Little Liars," get ready to love her even more.

'Pretty Little Liars' Teaser Debuts-- Prepare To Be Chilled!

    Pretty Little Liars

When we left you last, casting for ABC Family's adaptation of the book series “Pretty Little Liars” was far from complete, but with an episode teaser now available on the ABC Family homepage, it looks like that’s far from the truth (get it?).

The new teaser reveals some familiar faces but that’s not the only thing revealed! We already knew Lucy Hale of “Privileged” had signed on, but so has Ashley Benson, known for her roles in recently canceled “Eastwick” and “Bring It On: In It to Win It.” In the one-hour drama, set to this summer, Lucy and Ashley will be a part of a foursome of besties (completed by actresses Shay Mitchell and Troian Avery Bellisario) who reunite one year after their friend Alison goes missing because they all start getting sketchy messages from someone who goes by "A."

Opening with an ominous scene of a funeral, the teaser follows with a taunting montage of clips, including a passionate kiss and provocative shoulder-rub. The clip does not shy away from raising more questions to its viewers, showing the girls exchanging deathly looks towards one another, as well as a series of chilling moments to add to the suspense. At times, the girls even look fearful! All of this is combined with haunting music and the tagline, “Never trust a pretty girl…with an ugly secret.”

One thing is for certain, we’re left in suspense and with more questions than ever! Tune in this summer to find the answers, but until then, check out the full teaser!

Lily Collins, Alexandra Daddario, Lucy Hale, and Jessica Lucas Talk Beauty

    girltalk.jpg

Darlings, I felt very L.A. indeed when Dior Beauty and I hosted a lovely tête-à-tête with not one but four of the city's sweetest starlets. I got to grill them on their favorite beauty tricks (and disasters!)--read on for the dish!

Teen Vogue: What's your beauty philosophy?

Lily Collins: Try to be more adventurous! I've loved going red for my latest movie role [Priest, out in August]. Being a redhead has totally changed my beauty outlook, not to mention my closet. I have a whole new wardrobe of clothes that go with my hair.

Lucy Hale: I'm all about low maintenance. When you're working on set, you spend so many hours in the hair and makeup chair that by the time you get home, you just want to be fresh-faced.

Jessica Lucas: It can be hard to be experimental with looks because you have to stay uniform during production--I know that's the case for me on Melrose Place. But I'm looking for an excuse to color my hair. I've never dyed it before. Maybe they could write it into the plotline!

Teen Vogue: Any beauty disasters you're willing to divulge?

Alexandra Daddario: I accidentally dyed my hair purple once. Let's just say it was after a bad breakup, and it was not pretty. When I got my role in Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, they had to bleach it and recolor it. My hair texture has never been the same.

Lucy Hale: Once, a makeup artist accidentally put nail polish on my lips. At first, I thought he was using a lip plumper because my mouth was tingling. Then, my lips felt like they were falling off!<

Teen Vogue: Do you think Hollywood sets an impossible beauty standard for teen girls?

Lucy Hale: For a while, it was all about looking really beachy and blond. Thankfully, that's going out of style.

Lily Collins: Totally. And superthin arched brows, which are pretty much the opposite of what I have. Every makeup artist in town was trying to "fix" my eyebrows. No way! They're one thing I'll never change about myself.

Teen Vogue: What's the hardest part of being in the public eye?

Lucy Hale: Your lifestyle definitely changes. I rarely do my own makeup for the red carpet anymore. I'll think I look good, but then I see the photos of myself--ouch!

Teen Vogue: And how exactly do you deal with seeing bad pictures of yourself ?

Jessica Lucas: (laughs) I pretend they don't exist.

Lily Collins: I try to think about it this way: There are unflatâ¿¢tering pictures of some of the most beautiful women out there--even Kate Moss!

Alexandra Daddario: It's just something that comes with what we do. I try to ignore any negativity--whether it's bad pictures or nasty comments. When I first started working on Percy, I'll admit I had a bit of a googling problem. So many people were being so mean about my casting when they hadn't even seen what I could do! Now, I stay off the Internet, period.

Teen Vogue: How do you cope with the pressure to stay thin?

Lily Collins: Maybe I'm just growing up, but I feel so much more comfortable with myself lately. I'm doing what I love, and the parts of my brain that used to obsess about body image are now focusing on work.

Alexandra Daddario: I'm going to be honest--it can really be demoralizing. I've had the experience of not being
able to fit into designer dress samples, and I start
to think, What's wrong with me? But you have to remember what you love about yourself.

Jessica Lucas: I agree that a lot of the time self-esteem is linked to clothing. Those designer samples are teeny! But I'm 100 percent happy with my body. I work out,
I eat healthy, and, ultimately, I'm confident about who I am. That's the most important message to remember--Hollywood or not!

Project based on young-adult novel set at weight-loss camp

    By Nellie Andreeva

    Jan 25, 2010, 11:00 PM ET

ABC Family is close to greenlighting an hourlong project based on Alloy Entertainment's young-adult novel "Huge" by Sasha Paley.

"My So-Called Life" creator Winnie Holzman wrote the script with her daughter, Savannah Dooley.

The project, described as "Glee" meets "Ugly Betty," explores how young girls deal with body-image issues. It is set at Wellness Canyon, a weight-loss camp, and revolves around two girls from different backgrounds who fall for the same guy.

Holzman is executive producing the project with Alloy's Leslie Morgenstein and Bob Levy. Veteran writer-producer Robin Schiff, who executive produces the ABC Family comedy series "10 Things I Hate About You," has been involved in the project from the get-go and is expected to serve as an executive producer.

The untitled light drama has not been officially greenlighted, but casting is under way. A detailed breakdown for the project released last week lists March 29 as a target production start date.

Alloy is in business with ABC Family on "Pretty Little Liars," a pilot starring Lucy Hale.

Lucy Hale To Become One Of The 'Pretty Little Liars' In ABC Family Series Based On Books

Posted 10/20/09 1:30 pm ET by MTV News in Page Turners, TV News

    By Nuzhat Naoreen

First, there was "Mean Girls," then there was "Gossip" girls, and now, fans might be able to indulge in a little more teen-queen drama with "Pretty Little Liars," which is this close to being picked up by ABC Family, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Pretty Little LiarsBased on a series of young-adult novels by author Sara Shepard, "Pretty Little Liars," is set after the disappearance of high school queen bee, Alison (think "Gossip Girl" Blair Waldorf, but totally heartless). The show will focus on Alison's four girlfriends, who reconnect after they start receiving text messages from Alison, taunting them about their deepest secrets. The texts continue even after Alison's body is found. Spooky!

THR also reports that the show will likely star Lucy Hale, who should have no problems playing a member of the elite, considering her recent resume credits include roles on the CW's now defunct "Privileged," and most recently, Lifetime's original movie "Sorority Wars." For the rest of the clique, may we suggest ABC Family picks some of the cast offs from the recently canceled "The Beautiful Life: TBL," we bet they know a thing or two about social climbing.

It revolves around her four 16-year-old girlfriends, Aria (Hale), Emily, Spencer and Hanna, who have lost touch with one another until each of them begins to receive mysterious messages suggesting that Alison is watching them and knows every secret they're desperate to keep. Lucy Hale dished about "Privileged" and her character, Rose, to TVGuide.com. When asked what Lucy's favorite thing about Rose is, Lucy answered, "My favorite thing about her is she's genuine and vulnerable. She wears her heart on her sleeve. The one thing I'd change is that she becomes more independent and creates more of an identity for herself." On that note, Lucy hinted at a big change for Rose's character in the last two episodes of the season: "It will be sad for the fans of the twins and how they're always together, but we are going to learn that they are two different people and don't always have to be together."

Lucy also told TV Guide that she's actually moving in with her co-star, Ashley Newbrough. "We're getting an apartment together. She's literally one of the greatest people I've ever met in my life. I've been told that the sweetest people play the best bitches."

As for what's next for Lucy, she hopes to reappear on "How I Met Your Mother" as Robin's sister: "I'm really going for it, because outside of 'Privileged,' that's the most favorite thing I've ever done. Keep your fingers crossed, because I sure am!"

    The CW 2008 Upfront Presentation

The CW upfronts was much more than I expected. They go all out! I had a really good time.  It was cool to meet everyone from the other shows and also to see everyone that was involved in our show.  They made us feel like part of the family.  The dress I wore was BBG Max Azria.  It was a last minute purchase since I found out the day before that I was going to New York!

    Fifth Annual Lucky Club

While I was in New York for the CW Upfronts, Ashley Newbrough and I attended the Fifth Annual Lucky Club event. These pictures are of me at Lia Sophia jewelry, Michael Stars, Madewell, and others. It was fun, and I loved hanging out with Ashley.

    CW/CBS/Showtime/CBS Television TCA party

On July 18th, I attended the CW/CBS/Showtime TCA party at Boulevard 3 in Los Angeles. I wore BCBG Max Azria, my shoes are Betsey Johnson, and my earrings are designed by Lia Sophia.
The cast and I were promoting “Privileged” to the Television Critics Association – the show premieres Tuesday, September 9th!

This past summer, in the "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2," Lucy's character, Effie, stole the pants. Now Lucy is stealing the spotlight as the spoiled twin Rose on "Privileged."

Cosmo Girl handed the 19-year-old actress from Memphis a camera, and she snapped away on the set to give us a real taste of life behind the scenes on her new show.

    I Love Lucy

All hail Lucy Kate Hale – aka the sweet twin, Rose baker, on the CW's "Privileged" – who couldn't be more radiant, more charming, or better poised to take over Tinseltown
    By Andrew C. Stone

First off, I can't believe I'm writing about a young woman born in 1989 (on June 14, to be exact – go Gemini!).  Feeling a little old here, people.

That out of the way, let me introduce you to Lucy Kate Hale, the multitalented star of the CW's hit rom-com "Privileged." A pint-size Memphis gal with a formidable singing voice, Hale made a big splash on the "make the band" competition show "American Juniors," finishing in the top five and joining the band of the same name upon the show's conclusion.  The group broke up, but Hale had already managed to catch the attention of big-time casting agents. Before long she was guest-starring on "The OC," "How I Met Your Mother," "Drake & Josh," and "American Family"; she eventually found herself playing sister to Jaime Summers in the ambitious yet short-lived "Bionic Woman" remake.
